Artistic Director Paul Schieman

Founder and Artistic Director Paul Schieman is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal. There he majored in oboe and organ performance, graduating with a Bachelor of Music Degree With Distinction in 1978.

In 1979, at the age of 23, he was appointed the Assistant Principal Oboe and English horn of th Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. That same year he became Organist and Choir Master of St. Andrew’s United Church in Edmonton. In 1980 he formed the Alberta Baroque Ensemble and has held the position of Artistic Director ever since.

In 2001 Schieman was inducted into the City of Edmonton Cultural Hall of Fame. In 2002 he was one of several prominent arts figures to be awarded a Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, acknowledging Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their community. In 2005 he was awarded an Alberta Centennial Medal for his contribution to the arts in Edmonton and the Province of Alberta.

Schieman is married to Janet Schieman, who is the Artistic Manager of the Alberta Baroque Music Society. Their three sons, Jonathan, Christopher and Daniel, have grown up volunteering with the ABE.
